Always White and Blue – May/June 2018

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.51.29 am.png

Well. We did our part and for once Bayern lent us a hand. We secured Champions League group stage football after a ding-dong battle with Stuttgart. 2-0 down in 15 minutes. 2-2 at 40 minutes, we were up 4-2 with ten minutes to go. About 20 seconds after exhorting the players to concentrate a defensive lapse made it 4-3. Brown trousers time for the last ten minutes but we managed to get out of the game with an invaluable 3 points that put us out of reach for Dortmund.

Finishing the season with a 3-1 win over Hamburg was lovely but horror was to come…

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.27.31 am.png

With ten minutes to go against Hamburg, Ribamar seemed fine to me. But he went off and I got this horrific news. We had the Cup Final coming up and he had been excellent all year. It may not have showed on the stat sheet but he was heavily involved up front and I had even adjusted tactics to allow him to be even more involved. *sigh* Such is the way of the FM Gods. We do have Colidio (or Colidigol as he is known) on the way, but who knows what will happen with him out.

I think we will be OK and he is only 20 so he should put it behind him.

The Cup Final was an utter disaster. We have played Bayern pretty well every time but on this occasion they ran absolutely riot. Specifically, Lewandowski ran absolutely riot and we just generally had a shocker. The game was over as a contest with Bayern up 3-0 after 35 minutes. It’s a shame but the priority was survival and we smashed that expectation so to make the Final was nice but I wasn’t expecting much.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.48.02 am.pngScreen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.28.07 am.png

“We’re in the money… Huh-uh-uh-Honeeeeey! We’re in the money, and we paid our debt off too…”

Overall I can have absolutely no complaints. We do have to look at how we play defensively if we are going to persist with the 4-3-3 narrow as it conceded a few more goals than one would have hoped. Sure we won a majority of those games rather than draws with the Buffalo Wing but even so, it is something that needs to be addressed. Especially with Champions League football next season. Any suggestions on a tactical overhaul (if needed)? Whack them in the comments.

So, we finished 2nd, made the Pokal final and have got a financial windfall this season and next. Overall a fantastic effort by the players. Simply superb. Here’s hoping we can go one better next year.

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 12.34.44 am.png

Handy profit! The finances are looking good. The board have offered £4 million pounds for transfers for next season. I am hoping that can get a little bump. Time will tell.

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 12.33.46 am.png

You’re not helping.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.36.28 am.png

Two years in a row! He has been excellent in u19 matches and I am keeping an eye on him to make his debut and play some cup football next season.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.55.37 am.png

Uduokhai was absolutely superb. I am a little surprised Romero didn’t get any love as he had a brilliant season. Ortega thoroughly deserved 3rd. He was much better than his average rating of 7.06 would indicate.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.55.51 am.png

Blah, blah, players should get the credit, yadda, yadda, yadda.

And it seems some of the fans agree!

Uhhh… I’ll remember that, pal.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.56.03 am.png

Jeez Julie. You’ve been getting stuck into us all year.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.45.31 am.png

Romero was superb this year with 18 goals in 27 games. How he didn’t get near the Newcomer of the Year award is a mystery.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.45.42 am.png

A great year. A young squad and things are looking pretty groovy at the Allianz.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.45.57 am.png

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.34.25 am.png

Favoured staff, eh? Time to become an egomaniac I think. Still, it’s always nice when this happens on FM.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.48.32 am.png

I took advantage of the Bundesliga winnings to ask for an upgrade and the board have delivered. It’s fantastic news as with the improvements we are slowly making to the staff, having great facilities will only make for even better young players making it through and hopefully reaching their potential.

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 1.13.10 am.png

My top players for the season are Ortega, Romero, de Ligt, Ribamar and Boya and Uduokhai. But Sessegnon was extremely promising after his transfer from Fulham as was Abouchabaka. A special mention comes for Sascha Mölders. He basically hadn’t played for 18 months since I took over. When Romero went out for two months I gave him some football and boy, oh boy did he deliver some excellent performances. He is 32 but it was enough for me to give him one more year on a reduced salary to be a solid backup for the main forwards.

Anyway, an excellent year all told and we are excited about that is to come. We are on the up and Bayern better watch their ******* backs!

Always White and Blue! – Mar/April 2018

Exciting times as we entered the final phase of the season. Amazingly Champions League football was in sight and if we could put together a string of performances then we might be making the big bucks next season. It should also serve to keep some of the players happy who appear to be having their heads turned by some big clubs. Some have signed new contracts for the long term which is fantastic news and Romero was back after a long injury layoff. What could we accomplish in March and April?

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 1.33.31 am.png

Well. What started brilliantly ended up as brown trousers time. We really made it tough for ourselves but we have managed to secure (at a bare minimum) a spot in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League. Ideally we would like to have a group stage spot but we have Red Bull and Dortmund breathing down our necks and our players decided that it was all too hard. As usual, some Romero alpha male dominance allowed us to snatch a point at Frankfurt to secure the aforementioned spot. But, my God… The games against Schalke and Red Bull were utter domination followed by a goal against the run of play. It wasn’t necessarily players badly underperforming, it was just a solid counter attack and a complete lack of finishing on our part. Still, we smashed “Neverkusen” in the Pokal which will lead to…

Wait for it…

Just hold on…

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 12.51.49 am.png

Awwwww yeah! Mouth-watering is right young bucko. It should be a classic.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 1.34.14 am.png

Only three matchdays left. Dortmund have a game in hand which could make things very tight indeed. We play Stuttgart (H)  and Hamburg (A), with Dortmund facing Freiburg and Bayern, both being away games. Unless my mathematics is extremely faulty, Red Bull cannot catch us so it is between the two of us for that last automatic spot.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 1.29.55 am.png

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 1.30.10 am.png

This is understandable. I am hopeful that DFB “Filthy Lucre” otherwise known as prize money will help bump that up. Otherwise, being able to extend the loan of de Ligt would be fantastic. He has been immense. Shame that it seems that all I am doing is helping create a ready made player for Ajax when, if my board hadn’t been so stingy, he could have been a permanent signing back at the start of the season.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 1.34.38 am.png

I think I am pretty special too…

So, 1860 have qualified for the Champions League in their first season back in the top flight. I have the suspicion that one win should be enough unless Bayern roll over and play dead on the final match day. I would put anything past those *********.

Always White and Blue! – Jan/Feb 2018

A busy couple of months at the Allianz after a well earned winter break. Some players went away to sunnier climes on a brief holiday before returning for a quick training camp in the Baleares. We were working on a narrower 4-3-3 as I am preparing for the absolute glut of strikers that we will have from next season. The transfer window opened up too meaning that we could look at improving our LB position and in midfield. We had some particular targets in mind and seriously splashed the cash. But I think in time we will be proven correct. It’s one of those things where it may look expensive now but if it can get us continental football then it will be 100% worth it. Some decent results followed after the break with one or two matches we would like to take back. The narrow 4-3-3 worked wonderfully well at times and got some good results. I think I shall use it until the end of the season and and see what we we need to utilise for next season.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.45.11 pm.png

Well. there are three results that stand out for different reasons. After having lost to Wolfsburg in a game that we controlled from start to finish and dropping points to Mainz we really needed to respond. So I took the punt on the three striker 4-3-3. I figured that we essentially have Aigner playing as an auxiliary striker and Amilton likes to cut inside as well, so we could find a way to utilise Gytkjær, Romero and Ribamar at the same time. Well, it had immediate results thrashing Leverkusen and Hannover in the Pokal and an amazing game vs Bayern. We led 3-1 at around 60 minutes but Bayern being Bayern they managed to get a superb goal out of Vidal and then a late kick in the teeth made it 3-3. I was pretty unhappy we let a two goal lead slip but getting a point is a top result. The game against Augsburg was a shocker. Two mental lapses from set pieces did us in but we ended the month on a high with an annihilation of Freiburg.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.26.43 pm.png

Could have been better. But 4th? That’s incredible as far as I am concerned. 11 games to go in our first Bundesliga season and absolutely anything could happen. Having drawn to Bayern and beaten Dortmund is fabulous as we have some games against league strugglers coming up in the future that could end up leaving us sitting pretty.

We spent a lot on two wonderkid midfielders (in my humble opinion) but, as I said, I think it will be worth it. Liendl was sold to St. Pauli for £300,000 pounds as he wasn’t getting games and is now the wrong side of 32 so I thought I would get something for him and replace him with a younger talent.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.00.07 am.png

I don’t think we will see the extra £75,000 but for a player in his position I think it is good business. And here is his replacement…

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 10.51.25 am.png

He doesn’t look like too much yet but my scouts love him, he can play in multiple positions and has a ton of potential. Win. Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, he had a handy debut.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.42.29 am.png

Next we tried to fill our LB spot. There was a lot of utter dross out there so I spent over the odds to get a potential starting LB for the next decade or more. Purchased for the princely sum of £9.5 million pounds, I present to you the following starlet for the stable.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.04.08 am.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.04.30 am.png

Speed to burn, an excellent crosser and underrated defender at only 17 years of age, Sessegnon looks to be a star in the making. I have started on retraining him as a wingback to suit our system and when/if he becomes a natural at that we will look to train him as a fullback as well.

Worth every pfennig.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.05.45 am.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.05.55 am.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 11.49.17 am.png

So they bloody should think I am awesome. I am.

And modest too…

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.25.46 pm.png

All that spending took a chunk out. But you need to spend a bit sometimes. Oh yes, we had our youth intake too. It has some real talents…

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.20.05 pm.png

Müller and Paula are the stars of the show. Not exactly much depth in the intake, but hopefully that will improve.

Here are the young future 1860 Munich stars.

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.21.05 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.21.17 pm.png

Some decent potential there. And a 14yo at 190cms is intriguing.

Anyways, there you have it. I am hoping to move to bi-monthly updates as I enjoy them more. I hope you all do as well.

Always White and Blue! – Hinrunde 17/18

Forever1860.pngcooltext236333722668049 (1).png

Welcome back!

It’s been a busy few months at the Allianz with the Hinrunde just being completed. Some excellent football has been played and we find ourselves sitting nicely on the league table. The Chairman is back on my good side after he sold my hot prospect striker to Dortmund for a pittance. The offer was too good to refuse he tells me. Being considered “rich” I had to settle for a rather paltry transfer budget to start trying to hoover up all the talented starlets around the world.

Screen Shot 2017-03-13 at 12.10.59 pm.png

Ummm. Yay?

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.11.46 pm.png

We were fending off bids for ages on Reinert. It’s a crying shame as he is a German national who has a lot of potential. The sniffing around the others appears to have stopped for now, but Max Romero and Ribamar are now the next Mario Kempes and Luis Fabiano respectively so I am sure I will start to see some unwelcome interest.

In terms of transfers we stretched the remit of the game (just this once) and made a permanent signing out of Ba. Ironically, Ba is not a first team regular as envisaged. That honour goes to Mattias de Light, a young Ajax defender, who has been very impressive considering his tender years. Composed on the ball and solid in all aspects he has been great for us. I do regret the signing of Vargas. Sure he was signed to backup Wittek, but not only has Wittek now gone, Tim Handwerker came in on a free transfer and has been excellent in the absence of Boemisch.

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 2.43.36 pm.png

We made a profit on our signings over the close season but the big ones for me (financially yes, but also talent wise) were the sale to Augsburg of Max Wittek and the signing of Max Romero. The next Mario Kempes is living up to his billing at the moment being able to keep Ribamar and Gytkjær on the bench. Liendl has been sidelined by the development of Neuhaus and Lacazette so will probably be leaving soon having been transfer-listed. Reinert’s sale has one silver lining. Depending on the clauses we may be looking at £4.7 million pounds when all is said done.

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 2.50.45 pm.png

I hardly expected this! We have dropped some gettable points but the 4-3-3 is going very well. Especially since we implemented some tweaks by the wonderful people on Slack. 13 games unbeaten to end the Hinrunde and we look in control of games for the most part. The only issue presenting itself, as previously mentioned, is that of playing one striker and retraining the others or moving to a 4-4-2 or variant thereof. Post your thoughts below!

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 2.53.45 pm.png

We copped an absolute hiding from Chicarito and Leverkusen but overall things have been extremely positive. We are playing some great football and should take a lot of confidence into the Rückrunde. We were toothless against Bayern, but isn’t everyone? Beating Dortmund away and Bremen away were great results and amazingly keep us in the thick of the European hunt. I am waiting for our form to drop off but as long as we keep it tight and our possession stays decent we should be fine. After all, if they don’t have it, they can’t score. This isn’t to say we are playing tiki-taka though.

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 2.58.02 pm.png

Solid. Very, very solid. I am honestly unsure as to how long Aigner can continue to keep to this standard. He is at that age where things could start to head south. Fast. Romero has 9 goals in 14 and Amilton, who was almost sold last season has chipped in with 8 goals and 6 assists. Not much to say here really, it has all been very positive.

In extra-happy-sunshine-lollipop-wowzers news, I thought I would take a punt and requested that my Chairman improve the already superb youth facilities. The man didn’t even blink, approving development of the facilities valued at over £5 million pounds.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 6.10.22 pm.png

This after improving the training facilities which should see us set for years to come.

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 11.50.49 pm.png

So there you have it. 1860 are flying in the league, development of the facilities is hurtling along and things are looking very rosy indeed. We have a bloody long way to go before we achieve our goal of more Champion’s Leagues than those red ********* from across the way but as we always say…

Always White and Blue! – The Rückrunde

Well, those of you following the blog are no doubt aware that we secured promotion. Could we go ahead and finish the deal? Stuttgart were breathing down our necks all season and it was obvious it would go into the last couple of days to determine who would be the 2.Bundesliga champion.

Luckily, our form had recovered from my nigh on disastrous need to tinker tactically and we were flying with our 4-3-3. Ribamar was on fire and had even started playing on the right wing which is where he is being retrained to play with the arrival of Colidio expected at the end of next season. This would mean a forward triumvirate of Ribamar, Aigner and Colidio which should certainly be good for a few goals!

That being said, it was always going to be tough. But we felt that we had the talent to get there and the tactics were solid so I was hoping for a strong finish.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.28.31 pm.png

Wooooohoo! Stuttgart dropped points on matchday 31 which gave us a bit of a cushion we were not going to give up. We maintained our 4 point gap as we ruthlessly dealt with our opponents in the last few rounds. Fabulous stuff. The fans were delighted, the board was delighted, I got a new contract and was therefore delighted. It’s all rainbows and sunshine at the Allianz at the moment. The real positive for me was that we only conceded 21 goals in our 34 games. This naturally includes my above-mentioned foolishness in experimenting with 4-4-2 *shudder*.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.27.36 pm.png

Well. When we pay our exorbitant rent that will be around £8.5 million but whatever.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.27.18 pm.png

Awww shucks… *blush*

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.26.26 pm.png

Don’t know about “one of the best”…

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.24.53 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.26.41 pm.png

See, I don’t know about this. If you are predicted 4th then surely promotion and/or a championship isn’t that far fetched. Is it?

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.35.59 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.29.11 pm.png

As you can see, the matches between Braunschweig and Union Berlin were the experimental period. I sure as eggs wont be doing that again. Almost gave me kittens… The best part of the season was beating Stuttgart home and away. This gives us great confidence that we can do OK in the Bundesliga. It will be tough though. Big clubs are strongly pursuing the youth prospects that I highlighted in my earlier post and it is getting to a point where the dreaded acceptance by the Chairman may be about to occur. Fingers crossed.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.30.01 pm.png

Uduokhai was player of the year. Ever present he was a revelation as our number one defender. Gytkjær was superb until Ribamar essentially took his starting spot. A very nice backup to have and a return of 12 goals was excellent. Ribamar is (as I said) being retrained as an inside forward on the right and he had a good return from injury providing 7 goals for the year. Max Wittek was brilliant. I love the little fella, but he is starting to whinge about being able to join Augsburg. 1860 to AUGSBURG??!?!? Where is your ambition, lad?

I have high hopes for Neuhaus. He didn’t play much this year but he is young and has a nice spread of attributes so he can fill a role. Claasen is moving to Turkey. I wish he had shown some form BEFORE he agreed a move but these things happen. After the move was agreed he started on the left and was very effective. Finally, Aigner deserves a mention. 12 goals from the left and right wings. A superb set of performances. A new contract. Excellent!

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.46.45 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.35.45 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-21 at 1.48.32 pm.png

3rd in the u17 Player of the Year. But he cannot even play yet. Honestly not sure why they bother with this award given the restrictions on players u17 having first team action.

Screen Shot 2017-03-21 at 1.48.43 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 1.02.16 pm.png

Yep. What a surprise. That rent is  killing us and the loan will start to now that we have to begin repaying it.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 1.02.24 pm.png

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 1.02.40 pm.png

He’s still a cheapskate…

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 1.13.02 pm.png

And obviously likes to make me look like a moron.

This will be brilliant for us. Our training is good and our coaches are good but there is nothing better than an improvement to the facilities. Here’s hoping for the youth facilities to get a bump as well.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 1.28.17 pm.png

Why they couldn’t wait until the reset date, when we are a Bundesliga club, is beyond me.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 1.10.04 pm.png

All in all and excellent season. We got straight up to the Bundesliga and our reputation should be going up so we can attract more talented youth players for transfers. Our first season in the Bundesliga is all about survival. As long as we can stay in the division we should start really flying from the following season. Well, here’s hoping things stay on the up. BUNDESLIGA BOUND, BABY! Whoo!

Always White and Blue! – The Kids Are Alright!

It’s intake day! Hooray!

This is the man who makes it all happen.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 1.28.46 pm.png

It will be interesting to see what happens with youth intakes. I have always been seduced by stats in my staff but recently it has been made clear to me that personality can trump the attributes. Especially in such an important role. Still. Those are some damn sexy stats. So I will give him a few intakes to prove he can do the business.

In such a save as this I really need the youth intake to be reasonably good every year in order to maintain the squad where I can’t (or won’t) fill gaps with other hot prospects from around the globe. This year was fairly handy with some decent potential players that can be used for 1860 in the years to come. Obviously the difficulty lies in the 2. Bundesliga and Bundesliga restrictions which mean that some of these players are going to have to wait years until they are able to don the fabled shirt of the real Munich.

With that in mind, let’s see what we have and what stands out in terms of my first youth intake.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 3.22.00 am.png

Hot tip: Niklas Reinert is already attracting large bids from Borussia Dortmund and Kaiserslautern. This is both wonderful as it seems to confirm his talent, but also horrifying as things will only get worse as he develops.

It’s not a bad intake in general. A nice spread of players but there seems to be a preponderance of players who fit more advanced roles. There could be a lot of competition for places in the coming years but, at the same time, our defence may be under pressure. I will be looking to retrain some players depending on how this all pans out. Again, we have at least two years on the majority of these players before they are even eligible for first team action. A blessing and a curse at the same time.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 2.59.48 am.png

Here is the showpiece. (SPOILER) Already attracting bids from the abovementioned teams, he looks to be the goods. Moraes says? Gun. My scouts say? Gun. My coaches… You get the idea.

The thing that stands out for me is his determination. That should stand him in good stead for his development and he is resilient which should (?) work to his benefit. Genuinely a chance to be a future star. And given he is 14, by the time he is looking at being brought into first team action, I should have a developed Colidio and Ribimar starting to blossom. This should make for a pretty fearsome strikeforce.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 3.22.25 am.png

I’m not too sure about this guy. His mentals are pretty bad and his physicals aren’t exactly screaming talent! But my scouts and coaches think he has excellent potential and training him for an IF position will be a priority.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 3.22.46 am.png

An Aussie with 14 passing at 15? Yes please. Glacially slow, Meredith will likely be used as the more advanced of the midfielders. That can cover for his lack of pace, allowing him to create and develop moves as the team goes into the final third.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 3.23.18 am.png

Another talented 14yo striker. Professional personality. High determination. I am a bit worried about his physical stats but he seems to have a certain something. What that is? Time will tell.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 3.23.36 am.png

Handy. I need CBs and he should fit the bill with some development. I hope (but fear) that being “fairly professional” may possibly hurt his development. But all I need is a solid central defender who makes few mistakes.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 2.36.58 pm.png

There you have it. 16 current Bundesliga players came from 1860. When we get promoted the number will rise but here’s hoping the numbers improve more.

In the end, it was a decent intake. A bit top heavy with 3 really good talents and a bevy of distinctly average players, I will be looking to see them develop to where they can provide cover and replacement for our current squad as they age, with a few to improve firther and become mainstays.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for the Rückrunde update where we see if 1860 can seal the deal. Wish us luck, it will probably be a nail biting finish with Stuttgart snapping at our heels.

Always White and Blue! – Promotion!

Just a quick update today.

Things are still tight in the title hunt with Stuttgart 4 points behind with 4 games to play. But I reckon we can do it. Record points haul apparently already which is positive and I think that our tactics and squad will hold up against better competition. Colidio is on his way and my scouts are scouring the globe for young stars.

Speaking of which, in the next instalment we will find that we have some nice young players coming into the club. Huzzah!

That’s all from me. Bask in the reflected glow of 1860 on the up!

Always White and Blue! – The Hinrunde

Forever1860.pngcooltext236333722668049 (1).png

Well. The Hinrunde has come to a close and we have a surprise leader in the 2.Bundesliga.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 6.26.12 pm.png

I believe the technical term is “Awwww yeah!”.

We had an excellent first half of the season after we crashed out of the DFB Pokal in the 1st round. In what is becoming a bit of an issue we just cannot seem to deal with tall, powerful players in the air and that is what costed us in the cup. In any event we are playing some great football and thoroughly deserve our place at the pointy end (if I do say so myself). Our play has been made possible by the midfield pairing of Adlung and Liendl who offer a lot going forwards but track back equally as well. In the DM slot, Boya is showing a lot and is keeping Lacazette out of the side. Gytkjær is apparently in contention for the Danish national team and has been very impressive.

Interestingly, we seem to be more adventurous away from home. I suspect that this is because teams seem more intent on attacking leading to more opportunities. I could be wrong but, in any event, scoring 22 goals in 9 away games is cause for great optimism. At home we are very solid only conceding 3 times. As the fixture list shows, when we lose we don’t get blown out. Perhaps there is a link to our high determination as a squad? Dunno…

Gee. I’m not being very helpful here!

We have three 1-0 losses this season. In each we have won the possession battle, had more shots, had better chances and watched as our forwards appear to be teletubbies with vertigo whilst our opposition take advantage of their limited opportunities. Very frustrating. Against Heidenheim we simply sleepwalked through the match. It was very flat and even a change to attacking in the second half didn’t even seem to have any effect. C’est la vie.

We are adept at getting the ball into dangerous areas. With the majority of our goals coming from near and around the penalty spot. Mind you, our opposition seem to be getting those sorts of chances too. Still, when it all comes down to it, it’s all about having more than the other guy which we are doing.

Guess which wing Aigner plays on? The right winger has been dominant with a string of excellent performances. We play with two IF(s) and a False Nine with our centre mids arriving late to get on the end of square balls or crosses. Interestingly we have scored 9 goals from corners. I knew we had a few as we tend to force a save and then with numbers in the box someone blasts in the rebound, but 9 is quite something. The forward setup works well with 12 goals coming from through balls. Me likee.

One thing that I have always struggled with is squad rotation. I have been a bit better at it so far but it is still something that could be improved. The young Uduokhai has been fantastic in defence but he is still prone to the odd lapse in judgement. But that’s OK. Aigner has been fantastic as mentioned and Gytkjær has been very lively chipping in 8 goals and 5 assists. For me though, the real performer has been Liendl. 8 goals and 4 assists as one of our central midfielders is superb and he has honestly been the difference in several matches.

They would have been fools not to extend the contract of such a modest and transcendent talent.

Well that’s all for now. There will be another update discussing our youth intake and the results of the Rückrunde to come.

Always White and Blue! – The Club

Greetings once again. Today I hope to do a few updates. Firstly, we are going to have a brief look at the club itself to get an idea of how they are represented in FM and how that aligns with my plans for this career. 1860, as you will see, have some great potential to overtake Bayern as the premier club in Germany. Secondly we shall be having an in depth look at the squad. There are some good kids and younger players in the group who we hope will form the spine of the club as we move towards our goals. The players section shall be broken into parts to avoid a wall of text and allow for a closer look at any players of interest. The breakdown will be by position groups with the goalkeepers being lumped in with the defenders.

After we have been through all this, we shall have a look at the tactics that we hope to employ with Die Löwen. As a little spoiler, it seems that we are blessed(?) with a plethora of defensive forwards. Anyways, onto the club!

the club.pngScreen Shot 2017-03-08 at 11.31.03 pm.png

As we can clearly see, 1860 Munich have a strong base for a 2.Bundesliga club. However this comes with potential issues. Playing in the massive Allianz Arena is a double edged sword as we will need to keep attendances high in order to go some way to paying the ruinous rent that we are responsible for, but the stadium can certainly accept those numbers.

The thing that will no doubt spring to your attention is the amount of debt. We are carrying £26 million pounds of it. That’s a lot. That’s a helluva lot! We don’t have to worry about this quite yet as the loan only kicks in when we are back in the Bundesliga. Given that our intention is to get there as soon as possible it may be a small window of breathing space. But that’s OK, we like a challenge.

The facilities are nothing short of excellent. Especially for our division. We have impressive training facilities and superb youth facilities. The club currently has around £18 million pounds in funds and has given me around £6.4 million to spend in transfers. But I hope to be somewhat selective with transfers as the facilities will require constant investment to retain their efficacy.

National reputation is about par for the course, but with the inherent fanbase one would expect it to be not too difficult to raise this to continental.

facilities.pngScreen Shot 2017-03-08 at 11.38.24 pm.png

As we have essentially covered the facilities above, this section is here more to remind you all of the onerous obligations imposed on us by our red, %%$**&# overlord. £2.58 million pounds a year. The sooner we get into our own stadium the better.

As for our youth focus, we can see that we have well established youth recruitment and average junior coaching. We need to improve the youth coaching part as soon as possible and I will be asking the board to put more money into that when I can. Oddly, the board philosophy was to “sign high profile players”. I am having no truck with that philosophy and will be seeking to have the philosophies pertaining to signing lots of youth players installed when that meeting happens in a few days.

Finances.pngScreen Shot 2017-03-09 at 10.22.40 am.png

£18 million in the bank. Nice!

Screen Shot 2017-03-09 at 10.09.52 am.png

Around £1.6 million in sponsorship per season which will go up 35% when reaching the Bundesliga. Nice!

Screen Shot 2017-03-09 at 10.10.08 am.png

£25.84 million loan. Repayable upon promotion to the Bundesliga. £215,000 per month until 2026??!?!? Not so nice. In fact, That is almost £1 million pounds more than our sponsorships are bringing in. *mutter*

So, good and bad, yin and yang (to get all hipster on you). 1860 has it all! As of this point it is more than likely that we need to get to the Bundesliga as soon as humanly possible even if it means that we start paying that loan off. The projections make for grim reading indeed.

Screen Shot 2017-03-09 at 10.09.22 am.png

Naturally these projections will change as time goes by, but seeing a balance of £32.59 million in the red by the end of the 2018/19 season is not for the faint of heart.

Well, that’s all for this update. Stay tuned for the positional breakdowns coming up next. There are some young starlets and an older star having a final swansong. Some of you know who this is. But it may prove to be an interesting surprise!

Always White and Blue!

Hello all and welcome to my first career save for FM17!

I thought long and hard about who I wanted to choose with lots of discussion with various people (Thanks all! You know who you are!) and a poll on twitter. In the end the tug of the heartstrings was too strong and I surrendered to the siren call of the real Munich club, 1860 München.

The oldest club in Munich, whose spiritual home is the ramshackle Grünwalder Stadion, 1860 originally were founded as a sports and fitness club (Turn- und Sportverein means Gymnastics and Sports Association) were originally founded in 1848. “1848?” I hear you say? Well yes, but they were banned as a hotbed of “revolutionary sentiment” in 1849 and subsequently reformed in, (you guessed it clever clogs!) 1860. The football department came in 1899 and has played (mainly) in the top two divisions of German football ever since.

1860 have had a tough existence. A club that has been beset with mismanagement and ill fortune, they remain beloved by many. In fact, you could often hear it said that more residents of Munich itself support Die Löwen than their hated red enemies. Perhaps the most poignant example of the lack of luck they suffer is that they share the Allianz Arena with Bayern to whom they have to pay rent!

A substantial amount of rent as you shall see.

After being forced to leave their home in Giesing for the Olmpiastadion and then to the Allianz Arena. The Allianz Arena groundshare was the brainchild of their President (Karl-Heinz Wildmöser) who was later found guilty and jailed as a result of bribery involved with the construction of the arena.

Further salt into the wound was the fact that initially both teams had a 50% share in the stadium but 1860, constantly beset with financial troubles, had to sell their 50% share.

Guess who bought their share? Wow! You catch on quick.

So during yet another financial meltdown, 1860 needed 8 million euro to survive. Bayern stumped up the cash but as always there was an ulterior motive. It wasn’t out of the good of their hearts, oh no, it was because if there was a default on the rent prior to 2025 then Bayern would be forced to pay 50 million in penalties.

(The Money Pit)

Take a deep breath…

Another one…

Ready? Good. 1860 are paying Bayern Munich £2.58 MILLION POUNDS PER SEASON. In the 2.Bundesliga. Ouch.

I think you get the picture. Or perhaps you need to know this just to put the icing on the cake…

There is a story of how Der Kaiser himself (Beckenbauer for those who don’t know) grew up as a rabid 1860 fan. Playing for another Munich side (SC Munich ’06), he and some of his teammates became aware that his team wouldn’t be able to support their youth system much longer. As he idolised 1860 he wished to join them but at an U14 tournament in a game vs the 1860 youth team in the final, he was constantly niggled and later came to blows with the young 1860 Munich central defender. He took this so badly that he decided to join another youth team…

The Bayern youth team…

And became a legend.

Winners of the Bundesliga in 1966 and the DFB Pokal in 1942 and 1964, 1860 have not had the success a rabid and large fanbase deserves. This must change and who better than yours truly to either lead them to glory or stick yet another nail in their coffin? As you will see in the next post, the facilities are fantastic, the potential is there and it is time for a blue dawn over the skies of Munich.

The aim of this save will be to win more Champions League trophies than Bayern. The restriction is that any players purchased may be only 18yo or younger. The rest of the players must come from the renowned 1860 youth system which has brought us such stars as the Bender Brothers (Sven and Lars), Julian Weigl and Kevin Volland to name but a few in recent times.

It’s going to be a hell of a ride.

The next posts in this series will serve for a bit of background to the club as they stand in FM17. The overview of the club and facilities, the first team squad and any promising players that reside in the youth system or 1860 II. We shall go through these and then have a bit of a chat about the tactics that we shall be attempting to impose on the club.
