Well, we have been given our expectations for the upcoming season and they are more than reasonable and our squad appears more than capable of meeting the goals of the board. That being said, we need to upgrade the staff pretty quick smart as the players are in need of some improvement and the youth squad lacks overall class. The most promising prospects have been promoted to the main squad as I want to get games into them. Let’s be honest, while the squad is good, some of the players in the B team and the youth squad look like they would not be fish out of water in the 2.Bundesliga so I hope to be able to give them some chances. I have also sent some scouts into the world (the world my skinflint board allows me to look at, that is) and should be getting reports on the guys I want in soon. Anyways, onto this update where we look at the expectations and the players we have to meet them at the time of writing.
As mentioned before, we have plenty of funds in order to raid the FM world for some talented younguns. So I felt that it would be solid to simply accept the board’s request for a top half finish and the second round of the DFB Pokal. Of course, we hope to do better but you never know what might happen. With that in mind, and given we aren’t trying to bring in big names, I felt that it was a simple matter to keep expectations manageable and then outdo them!
Looking at the squad, we have a nice solid mix of players without any glaring weakness except perhaps, if I want to stretch it a bit, at goalkeeper. In terms of the squad balance, we are blessed with quite a few players who are comfortable in various positions. When the inevitable injury bug hits us we should be able to cope with everything bar an ebola outbreak after an explosive case of squad wide diarrhoea. Well… One would ******* hope so anyways. A smattering of experience, some young starlets, it’s a good time to be an 1860 fan.
Onto the squad.
As you can see, we are a bit light on for goalkeepers. Not to say there is anything wrong with them. Zimmerman and Ortega are perfectly reasonable but they won’t set the light on fire. I see this as a position of need and if I can bring in a young gun to take over then I will be pulling that trigger like Doc Holliday fired off quips.
As for the defenders we have some good ones. Stojkovic looks class and I have a real soft spot for Wittek who could aim to make the LB spot his own. If we don’t play with 4 at the back then… ummm… He could certainly grow into a left sided place in the team. As for the rest of them, in the main they are solid. I tried to come up with something catchy, a little snappy comment regarding their abilities but what I come up with is “beige”. Nothing that would make Ruud Gullit all hot and bothered, but nothing that would have the average Conference North manager giggling into his pint like a schoolgirl either.
Felix Uduokhai looks a great prospect…
Granted he isn’t fantastic in the air but he has the basics and is only 18. The issue potentially is the clubs sniffing around him already. Allied with the fact that he is fairly ambitious, I might have some issues keeping him around. Happily we have the finances to make him want to hang around. We certainly have contractual wiggle room.
Oh I love Max Wittek (bless his little cotton socks). On first glance he doesn’t look much of a player but I reckon he is a good one. Flexible enough to play almost every position down the left flank he has nice solid attributes and is a good team player. At least, he has been in previous versions of FM. So if he stuffs up here? I am not blaming Max. Absolutely not. Never in a blue moon (geddit?). Ahhhh… So punny.
I’ll get my coat…
As you are no doubt seeing, there is some overlap in players as we move through the squad. I do like the flexibility of the squad and it is evident in midfield. Most players can play multiple positions and the depth is excellent. That being said, the squad is more geared towards flexibility than any particular brilliance in the main. The attributes of most of the players are functional and likely to allow us to push for promotion, but I don’t see a great many of them being able to demolish the Bundesliga. The 2.Bundesliga? Sure they can make some noise…
Michael is a good solid player. Technically gifted but lacking explosiveness I see him operating in the centre of midfield as our playmaker. Possessing good vision and the passing ability to pull it off, he could conceivable play as the No. 10 but in a likelihood he will sit in a CM slot firing the ball to all and sundry.
Lacazette is going to be in midfield as well. I do prefer a DM to a defensive minded CM player and Romulo has an excellent kind of personality for the roles I intend for him. Nothing glamourous but he has a great engine (as the pundits say) and is brave as all get out. A solid tackler he could certainly fill a Gattuso kind of role or as a Dechamps style “hod carrier” remit. At only 22 he certainly could be around for a while and it will be interesting to see what he can do.
Similar to Lacazette.
Eerily similar to Lacazette.
Almost TOO similar to Lacazette…
Much of what can be said about Romulo can also be said here. Boya has some decent technical attributes and some excellent physical characteristics. Being “fairly determined” may be an issue, but at this point it seems that he and Monsieur Lacazette will be fighting each other for a spot in the midfield. Boya has a couple of things going for him.
- He is younger and may improve a bit more.
- Boya is so much more given to puns and other laboured humour. Saying “Oh Boya” when he scores a goal or lays a crunching tackle means lot. And don’t argue that it doesn’t.
Adlung. Oh God… it’s just too easy. I… I…. ummm… **resists** IamsurethathewilldofineBUSTINGanADLUNGfortheteam. Phew. I feel much better.
All jokes aside, we can see the theme emerging in the side. We have plenty of players with excellent physical attributes but we badly need some more class. Daniel will be an excellent squad member being able to play reasonably in 8 positions. It remains to be seen if that will be in the starting XI or not. He may prove to be a decent tutor as we move forward as well.
Fanoli here just proves the point. Reasonably proficient, especially in defensive capabilities he is just another hard working midfield member. We have these in droves. Don’t get me wrong it is great, but again, we need someone a bit classier for those hard to break down defences that we are sure to face.
So the midfield. Hard working but lacking a certain “something”. They will serve us well but it is certainly crying out for an upgrade.
Well, well, well. Anyone spot the old star? Hmmm? Does this look familiar?
Oh yeah. He’s still got it! Perhaps not the lethal finishing, but just look at them mental and physical attributes. I think Ivica could make an excellent tutor to some of the young players in the squad, especially Ribamar who is a young Brazilian destined for great things (easy on the hubris, boss). Olic (interestingly) is listed as a defensive forward. We seem to have quite a few of those. Still an excellent example for the younger players who will run himself into the ground to get a result. Quickly too for his age.
Now this guy. He’s the key in my opinion. He develops? We have a lethal striker who works his guts out. We don’t? We… ummm… still have a guy who works his guts out. Errr, what I am getting at here is we have a 19yo who is fast, works hard and just needs some TLC. I reckon Ivica is going to enjoy this one.
Now who isn’t partial to a Dane who can finish? WHAT??!?! PEOPLE LIKE THAT EXIST?
Anyways, I think Christian (that surname will give me trouble) is a striker who could well be a difference maker for us. A more than solid finisher blessed with exceptional anticipation he seems to be a perfect striker for what I like. Someone who will make the most of their chances and be in place to turn those half chances into easy finishes. Well, he better bloody be as it will be a long season if he can’t!
Well, there you have it. The squad for 1860 München and a little snapshot into those who will (hopefully) play a key role for us as we shoot for the stars and take aim at the verdammte Bayern. At the moment I think it will be important to rebuild the staff as they are much like the players, functional but not over-endowed with enigmatic brilliance. I like enigmatic brilliance, me.
FÜR IMMER WEIß UND BLAU!
